Peking University, March 31, 2020: On March 27, medical experts from Peking University Sixth Hospital discussed mental health issues during COVID-19 via a video conference with experts from the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust. The London-based institute provides the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK.

 

At the online meeting, Lu Lin, dean of Peking University Sixth Hospital, introduced to the British team the measures taken by China to cope with mental and psychological problems amid the outbreak of COVID-19. Following the guidelines issued by the National Health Commission of PRC, universities and medical institutions across China have developed multiple ways to provide mental health services, such as psychological assistance hotlines, online counseling services, and mental health education. Then he responded to some questions raised by the British experts, analyzed the incidence rate of mental and psychological illness among coronavirus patients, and elaborated his experience in the psychological intervention for coronavirus patients, the diagnosis and treatment of patients with mental disorders, and the management of psychiatric hospitals.

The British side said this timely meeting enriched their understanding of COVID-19 and offered valuable experience in prevention and control, adding that these useful information will be of great help to tackle mental issues that arise from the virus outbreak.   

This is the second time that Peking University Sixth Hospital has shared experience in combating COVID-19 with an international institute that specializes in mental health. The last time was held with Spanish mental health authorities.
