Zhan Qimin Chairs the Committee of Program for National Biotechnology Development Strategy

  On February 28, the first meeting was convened for the compiling of the Program for National Biotechnology Development Strategy (the Program). It was led by the Ministry of Science and Technology and joined by National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Finance, and other ministries and commissions. The meeting meant the formal beginning of the compiling of the Program.

  Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology, acts as the head of the leading group of the compiling work of the Program. Zhan Qimin, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice President of Peking University and President of PKU Health Science Center, chairs the expert committee of the national biotechnology development strategy. The committee is composed of 33 experts from fields such as biomedicine and bio-agriculture, including 25 academicians. Zhou Qi, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, acts as the head of the compiling group of the Program.

  In order to ensure the Program to be the action guide for the medium and long term development of our country’s biotechnology, the compiling work of the Program will lay the focus on the following four aspects: first, the scientific assessment of the status quo of our country’s biotechnology and industrial development; second, the in-depth analysis and comparison of gaps in our country’s biotechnological development; third, the clarification of economic social development’s objective needs of biotechnological innovation; fourth, the scientific analysis of the development trend of international biotechnology and the determination of future directions of our country’s biotechnology.
