PKU Shougang Hospital Sets up China’s First VCU

Peking University Shougang Hospital announced on May 24 that its center for vascular medicine had received approval to run its own intensive care unit or VCU. The newly created unit is the first of its kind in China.

The center that harbors the VCU was established in April 2010, which was the first integrated facility for early detection of vascular diseases and lifelong management of vascular health, with an aligned clinical pathway from diagnosis, treatment to rehabilitation. Patients come to the center for early structural and functional abnormalities of blood vessels, as well as blood pressure- and lipid-related, renal, and peripheral vascular diseases.

Building on the clinical strengths of the center, the VCU runs four beds in the pilot stage and admits patients with critical diseases such as pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, foot gangrene and acute heart failure, as well as people at high risk of vascular intervention.
