In an effort to further its commitment to the Double First-Class initiative, Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) held a seminar on March 4 to review the development of its medical disciplines. The seminar featured a star-studded panel, with members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhang Lihe, Lu Lin and Xiaoliang Sunney Xie), members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Zhan Qimin, Wang Jun, Dong Erdan, and Jiang Baoguo), member of the United States National Academy of Medicine (Ke Yang), heads of disciplinary development at PKUHSC schools, hospitals and administrative departments, and external experts. The panelists were joined by President Qiao Jie of the PKUHSC, who is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

　　The panel heard presentations on 26 disciplines which an earlier feasibility study had rated as having established or potential edge over international peers. The presentations reviewed the disciplines’ visions, strengths, and key bottlenecks, set out priorities and roadmaps, and defined needs in resources and deliverables for performance check. In addition, the presentations also floated ideas on how these 26 disciplines might help other related disciplines to move forward.

　　As feedback to the presentations, President Qiao laid out her observations, saying that the disciplines should work to advance scientific frontiers and meet national needs through integrated innovation and institutional reform.
